In today’s rapidly evolving warehouse environment, automation has largely centered around outbound logistics—packing, sorting, and palletizing goods for shipment—leaving the reverse process of unpacking overlooked and manually driven. As e-commerce expands and return volumes surge, distribution centers are inundated with incoming packages that vary widely in size, shape, and contents, requiring careful handling to avoid damage. This task remains time-consuming, repetitive, and error-prone, contributing to rising labor costs and operational inefficiencies. To address this gap, we propose an Unpacking Robot capable of automating the intake and organization of inbound packages. Designed to receive open-top rectangular boxes, identify their contents, and sort them for further processing, this system reduces physical strain on workers, enhances consistency, and streamlines warehouse operations. By bringing automation to the unpacking stage, our solution not only boosts efficiency and accuracy but also supports more sustainable practices by minimizing waste and improving the reusability of returned goods.
